The Christological Foundations of the Doctrine of Sacred Icons According to John of Damascus
Vincent BOSCO

The significance of icons in our faith cannot be overstated. They are deeply rooted in the mystery of Christ’s Incarnation and His Paschal events. As St. Paul reminds us, Jesus is the visible icon of the invisible God (cf. Col 1:15). This book, originally a doctoral thesis, brings out the arguments of John of Damascus, justifying the depictions and veneration of icons against the iconoclastic controversy, a significant chapter in Byzantine history, which is generally divided into two distinct phases: the first spanning 726-787 A.D. and the second occurring between 814-843

Book Launch Event

On 29 November 2025, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem hosted a public presentation entitled “From the Visible to the Invisible: Reflections from Jerusalem on Sacred Images,” held under the patronage of H.B. Theophilus III, H.B. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and His Grace Bishop Koryun Baghdasaryan. The gathering took place at the Notre Dame of Jerusalem Centre. Fr. Vincent Bosco SDB presented his research on “The Holy Land as an Icon According to John of Damascus,” outlining the theological foundations that allow the Land of the Bible to be understood as a living icon that mediates divine mystery. Three additional speakers (Ms. Maria Ruiz, Fr. Christodoulos and Fr. Arshak Ghazaryan) contributed historical and spiritual insights into the theology of sacred icons, broadening the scope of reflection.

The presentation culminated in the launch of Fr. Vincent Bosco’s first book, The Christological Foundations of the Doctrine of Sacred Icons According to John of Damascus. The book examines the writings of John of Damascus on sacred icons and presents his response to iconoclasm through the use of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Traditions. The readers will find a pendulum effect of the arguments for and against the icons. Often, believers find an inner oscillation for and against icons. The book will undoubtedly provoke meaningful reflection and discussion among its readers. By engaging with this text, readers will not only gain knowledge but also a deeper appreciation for the sacred icons that have been an integral part of Christian worship and devotion throughout the centuries.

The evening was marked by a sizable Salesian presence, with the participation of Fr. Simo Zakerian, Provincial, and Fr. Emanuele Vezzoli, Vice-Provincial, together with the formators of the Ratisbonne Monastery. The occasion was enriched by a sincere spirit of oneness (one Church), witnessed in the presence of various patriarchs and faithful from different Church traditions.
